Connected Diesel Engine SAE J1939 Cloud Solutions – Air-J1939
Do you have diesel engines with SAE J1939 CAN electronic systems which are operating in the field and you experience problems because of a lack of engine status data?
Air-J1939
The Air-J1939 solution is a cloud based service that allows the user to remotely monitor industrial diesel engines fitted with a SAE J1939 CAN bus with an engine control unit (ECU). It is an end-to-end, connected asset solution that includes on-asset hardware, a local display, communications connections, web-based services and strong customer support.
The Air-J1939 is an after-market solution that has evolved from over a decade of industry experience and it is fully integrated, so you can focus on running your business more efficiently.
The Air-J1939 solution is a complete, flexible and high performance platform that provides efficient engine operation and maintenance. It is the ideal solution for the M2M market where remote monitoring, control and data logging are required.
Do you have diesel engines with SAE J1939 CAN electronic systems which are operating in the field and you experience problems because of a lack of engine status data?
- The engine ECU parameters and events are not available to the operators without a laptop and a software application?
- The J1939 data is only available locally, at the engine?
- The technicians and maintenance personnel are not able to remotely diagnose ECU events?
- The Caterpillar EMCP does not display all ECU parameters and events that you need e.g. engine de-rated?

Features
Features of the Air-J1939 solution are:
- It is suitable for diesel engines with SAE J1939 CAN bus electronics and an ECU.
- The engines may be monitored locally and from either a mobile device, a tablet or a computer.
- The engines may be monitored individually and can be grouped according to sites.
- The Air-J1939 solution can be retro-fitted to existing engines.
- J1939 data can be logged and scheduled to be sent via email at regular intervals.
- ECU events can be alerted via phone call, SMS or email.
- The portal connection can be either 3G/GSM, or LAN or WLAN. The connection can be independent of the site IT network.
- The portal uses a web interface, there is no additional software to install.
- User access can be password controlled and can provided as required for the installation; to operators, owners, technicians and vendor support personnel.
Benefits of the Air-J1939 solution are:
- Real-time ECU parameters and events are provided to the users who need this information. The information is delivered direct to the user’s mobile device.
- More efficient site visits for service and break-downs; because the event information can be diagnosed before leaving the work shop.
- Improved customer service.
- Improved engine availability.
- Easy identification of equipment abuse or improper operation.
- The solution can be completely independent of installed IT / SCADA systems. There is no requirement to interfere with existing communications and network infrastructure, saving possibly expensive and time consuming modifications.
The Air-J1939 mobile App is developed for iOS and Android. It can be downloaded free from their respective stores.
The App provides direct access to ECU parameters and events in real-time. The App allows the user to manage one or more engines by organising engines into areas or groups. For each engine, all the ECU parameters are monitored. The user can create lists of favourite parameters that can be accessed immediately. The users have mobility in being able to remotely monitor the engine. The App displays real-time ECU parameters and events. It displays stored event codes.
Web Portal
The Air-J1939 is part of the BESST Industrial Internet of Things (I2oT) system and it can be easily integrated to other services and products. The web portal provides the monitoring of extensive installations with the possibility of hundreds of devices. The portal uses a robust infrastructure for data security and has web centre for tools and automated services.
Air-J1939 Local Display and Gateway
The Air-J1939 Local Display is installed at the engine and it is connected to the Air-J1939 Gateway. The Local Display shows ECU parameters. It shows active and stored events.
The Air-J1939 Gateway connectivity is flexible because it can be configured to connect to the portal through any of the following networks:
- 2G or 3G modem
- Local area network (LAN)
- Wireless local area network (WLAN)
