Electrical Engineering Projects
Condamine Power Station, QueenslandCondamine Power Station is a 140 MW power station. It is the world’s first combined-cycle power station entirely fired by coal seam gas. It is also Australia’s first steam turbine condenser cooled by coal seam methane waste water. The role of the power station is to act as the black start station in the event of a grid blackout.

EDL West Kimberley Power Project, WAThe West Kimberley Power Project comprises of five power stations – four fuelled by LNG - at Broome, Derby, Hall’s Creek, Fitzroy Crossing and one diesel fuelled at Looma.
Each station is a remote area station, operating its own grid and independent of any other grid. |
Maitland LNG plant, Western AustraliaThe LNG plant on the Maitland Industrial Estate is located approximately 50km west, south-west of Karratha. The plant is supplied by North West Shelf Gas, delivered via a 3.2km pipeline spur from the Dampier Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline.
Off-site electrical engineering services were provided to assist in the preparation of electrical drawings and cable schedules, cable sizing, cable entity calculations, and peer-reviews. On-site electrical engineering services were provided to assist in the construction and commissioning of the plant, including 3 x gas turbines Solar Centaur (11kV), 11kV switchboard, 11kV capacitor switchboard, 3.3kV compressor motors, 415V MCC, PLC panel, distribution boards, switch room and process plant. This included the preparation of work orders, procurement, planning, schedules and reports. |
Diesel Power Station Extension - Gove, NTGove operations bauxite mine and alumina refinery is located near the township of Nhulunbuy in Arnhem Land on the north-eastern tip of Gove Peninsula.
During the G3 expansion, the refinery power station added 2 units, 1820 kW each @ 6.6 kV, Caterpillar 3516, acoustically enclosed generators. |
Andoom Power Station, Weipa QLDThe Andoom Power Station was built as a prime power, island station comprising 7 x Caterpillar 3516 generating units, 2 MVA each @ 11 kV, free-standing acoustically enclosed, with bulk diesel fuel storage and fuel
transfer. The station was built with the capability of operating in parallel with the Weipa Power Station via a 22 kV overhead line. The role of the station was to provide power for an expansion of the bauxite mining. The station was designed as a fully automatic, unattended, island prime power station with secondary import / export to the Weipa Power Station. The station has operated reliably since hand-over. It was nominated by Rio Tinto internally as a benchmark for prime power, diesel power stations. |
Millennium Arts Project, Southbank QLD (Gallery of Modern Art)
The Millennium Arts Project involved the construction of the new Gallery of Modern Art and the interface with the existing State Library building.
New 3.3 & 11kV switchboards were provided and some existing switchboards required extensions. This provided a challenge because of the age of the existing switchgear.

Capral Aluminium Factory, Queensland
When Capral Aluminium built a new factory at Bundamba, they selected Tamco from Malaysia to provide the 11 kV switchgear panels. Capral Aluminium is a leading supplier of aluminium extrusions and products to the Australian market. BESST acted as a representative to Tamco, interfaced with the electrical contractor, building contractor and consultant. BESST also supervised the installation and commissioning of the 11kV main switchboard.
MV/LV Switchgear Factory, UAE
The MV/LV Switchgear Factory is a project BESST created and designed from the ground up. This included planning the layout and operation. The factory is 3000msq with over 40 employees, Cubic lincensee assembler, Rockwell system integrator and Sitec agent. BESST implemented ISO9001 and was responsible for approving all projects for construction from this factory.
Abu Dhabi Sewerage Projects Committee
(now known as Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company(ADSSC))
The Sewerage Projects Committee decided to upgrade the sewerage pumping stations from manual control to remote SCADA operation from a centralised control station in Abu Dhabi.
Hunter Watertech, Dubai was awarded the contract. As part of the contract, the motor control centres and instrumentation at
each sewerage pump station required modification and upgrading. A total of 256 sewerage pumping stations across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi were upgraded over a period of approximately 18 months. The challenge was to keep each pumping station operational during the upgrades.
The project covered the manufacture and site installation of RTUs, site modification of existing motor control centres, site installation of Endress & Hauser instrumentation for level, flow and pressure measurement, site testing and client acceptance testing.

Meckhairiz, UAE - Abu Dhabi Police
Mekhairiz
is a remote jail located adjacent the Empty Quarter and operated by the Abu
Dhabi Police. Power was provided by 4 Caterpillar
units each 1500 kW @ 415V, diesel fuelled, prime power station. The station was designed for automatic,
unattended operation.
The scope of the work Design of complete electrical LV system, station control and auxiliary systems, preparation of cable schedule and interconnection diagrams, manufacture of station main switchboard and station control panel, preparation of station operating philosophy and functional description, programming of station PLC – Rockwell, site acceptance testing and commissioning.

Tarim Water Supply, Yemen
World Bank Project
This project provided a water supply system for the towns of Sayun and Tarim in Wadhi Hadramut , Yemen. The
main areas of the project were:
· A well-field with 7 wells providing ground water piped to the water treatment plant
· An overhead 11 kV distribution line to pump starters in the well field
· A water treatment plant and pumping station, with standby generation
· A main 11 kV switchboard with automatic transfer to standby generation
· A main 415 V motor control centre and station control panel
· Piping to 2 town reservoirs, each fitted with level control
· A Dupline telemetry control system, connecting the well field and reservoirs to the water treatment plant
BESST provided the complete electrical design, including electrical schematics, bills of materials, general
arrangements, control system configuration, instrumentation configuration and telemetry configuration.
