SAMPLING
Characteristics properties and contaminants may vary in heavy fuel oil even though the standard criteria may be same for a given fuel grade. Density, viscosity, upper pour point, and heating values need to be examined. The discrepancy between the standards and the actual properties may contribute to wear and tear, engine failure or high maintenance costs. Hence, it is essential to sample and analyse fuel samples. For critical outcomes, samples of heavy fuel oil during bunkering are taken. Sampling is also done in regard to emission issues.

The Annex 2 resolution of MEPC.96 (47) refines the guide lines for sampling on vessels according to MARPOL VI. The requirements appropriate MARPOL Annex VI „…is a product specimen having its physical and chemical characteristics identical to the average characteristics of the total volume being sampled“…, are regulated and ensured by the application of resolution MEPC.96 (47).

Sample bottles
Martechnic® provides several HDPE (polyethylene) sample bottles for oils and fuel in different sizes and cubitainers to get oil samples when bunkering heavy fuel oil. Furthermore a vacuum hand pump with tube & coupling, suitable for all bottles makes the handling and sampling easier. The 120 ml PET sample bottle is heat resistant up to temperatures over 85°C.
The sample bottles are consistent of water, alcohol, acid, oil and fuel. Nearly all of them are available with caps, labels and seals.
