Automation may be defined as the automatic operation or control of equipment, a process or a system. Automation generally has economic benefits and reliability, quality, operational and safety benefits. Automation is driven by many factors, including technology advancements and higher customer expectations.

The types of automation are listed below, such as:
- Local automation – an automatic sequence for a device or assembly, initiated either by a  
  trigger event or an operator, using local logic
- Remote manual – a local action initiated remotely, either by a trigger event or an operator
- Central automation – an automatic sequence for a device or assembly, initiated either by a trigger event or an operator, using
  centralised logic
The applied automation for a system may be a combination of the types of automation. Automation may be applied to:
