Water can be a contaminant when we talk of oils. In fact, after particulate matter, water is the second largest type of contaminant in oils. Its presence can be detrimental to system component life. Oil oxidation due to water can fasten degradation. Any oil can have a certain amount of water. The amount of water held depends on type of oil, additives, oxidation, pressure and temperature. This may lead to free water formation which can be damaging to the engine and is components.
WIO Check has been developed by Martechnic, Germany, for water-in-oil monitoring, to check the water content of fuel or lube oil on board, thereby helping to maintain and protect equipment. If this is too high, malfunction or damages could occur in the engine. This causes high reparation and maintenance costs, mechanical failures and expensive downtime costs. In order to minimize the risk of a breakdown and to keep the maintenance cost as low as possible, regular tests are essential.

To measure water in oil only one reagent (WA-SOL® and WIO or WT05 Solution) is necessary. The reagent is filled in the bigger chamber of the test device and the oil sample with a 10 ml syringe in the smaller chamber. The device is closed and now the measurement starts while shaking the equipment every 2 minutes for about 10 seconds in a time period of 20 minutes. The test result is readable directly.
